I’ve been supporting lawyers for over 20 years to help them achieve their career goals, double their income, and find the right firm fit for a happier life. If there is one thing I’ve noticed that is the most important of them all, it’s lawyer wellbeing — taking care of yourself, finding balance, so your work is just a part of the life you love.
We are offering this trip as an opportunity to explore both your inner world, to find peace and balance, and the exceptional and unmatched wilderness of Mamma Africa. Being here is a healing adventure all on its own, and we weave in deep cultural experiences, some of the best lodges in Tanzania, and deeper nature immersion to support our nervous systems to rest.
If you feel the call, I can’t wait to talk with you and share in this experience with you.
Our nervous systems rarely power down. Decision fatigue seems to be the new baseline. This retreat brings your system back to baseline through deep rest, nature immersion, and deep cultural experiences with the Maasai tribe. You return home clearer, quieter, more resourced, and with new connections and perspectives.
MORNING
Sunrise meditation and gentle movement. A guided walking meditation through the landscape.
MIDDAY
Nourishing meals, unstructured rest, optional one-on-ones with Charlie and Kathy. Pool, spa, or simply doing nothing.
EVENING
A walking meditation at dusk. Community dinner. Nights close around the fire with sound journeys, Maasai song, and open sky.
All sessions and wake times are optional. Honor your body’s needs.
The retreat moves through three distinct properties, each chosen for what it offers to the process of rest and recalibration.

A four-star boutique lodge on the rainforested slopes of Mt. Meru, set on a private lake. This is where the retreat opens and closes — a place to arrive fully, and release the weight of travel.

Built and managed by the Maasai tribe, in the heart of Maasai land between Kilimanjaro and Meru. The land speaks. Maasai elders are present. A genuine encounter with one of the world’s great cultures on their own terms.

Rustic cave rooms carved into ancient hillsides. Deep silence. A landscape that has drawn healers and seekers for generations. Mukuru is where this retreat goes the furthest inward.
All schedules are structured with flexibility. You are never required to attend any session.
Charlie and the team meet you at Kilimanjaro International Airport. Private safari vehicles transfer you to Ngare Sero Mountain Lodge. Breathwork to release travel stress, dinner, campfire, early rest.
Devoted entirely to decompression. Sunrise meditation, walking meditation around the lake, a grounding group session, then open rest — pool, spa, or one-on-one time. Sound journey after dinner.
A rainforest waterfall hike through Arusha National Park, lunch at the fig tree, then a game drive to Original Maasai Lodge. Maasai spear throw, sunset singing, stargazing.
Four Tanzanian lawyers join for a facilitated dialogue led by Kathy Richardson on the pressures lawyers face across cultures. The afternoon enters silence and digital detox. Bush Eagle Dinner and Maasai fire ceremony.
Final debrief with the Tanzanian lawyers, then onward to Mukuru. Settle into the cave rooms, an introduction to Maasai culture and traditional healing, and a whispering cane hike with blankets and tea.
A pre-dawn start for the retreat’s signature experience: the Mt. Mukuru day hike guided by Philipo, with bush breakfast on the mountain. The afternoon is deep rest and optional one-on-ones.
The most unstructured and most important day. Open time for rest, reflection, the Forgiveness Cave, traditional Maasai medicine, or simply stillness. Maasai campfire and stargazing.
A gentle closing morning and circle debrief, then a visit to the Sidai Cooperative — a Maasai-women-led artisan enterprise — for the traditional beading workshop before returning to Ngare Sero.
A final morning in the rainforest. Optional visit to Safi Café in Usa River — specialty coffee and a quiet moment before the journey home.
Deposit to reserve: $1,560 (confirms your place; non-refundable). Because legal schedules can shift, we offer a credit toward a future Lawyers Who Rest™ retreat or Sabbatical Journey if you are unable to attend.

Kathy brings a rare combination of legal expertise and deep commitment to the wellbeing of the profession. As a legal search consultant and merger strategist, she has spent her career elevating lawyers and law firms — and brings that same intentionality to curating wellness experiences designed specifically for lawyers and leaders.

For the past 13 years, Charlie has led restorative retreats and nature-based experiences in Northern Tanzania, supporting high-performing professionals to downshift and return home clearer and more resourced. Throughout the route he has developed “contemplation points” — sacred spaces discovered over more than a decade of roaming these landscapes.
